En Primeur, sometimes called "wine futures", is the practice of buying wine while it is still maturing in barrel, before it has been bottled and released to market. It is most closely associated with Bordeaux, but is also offered for select wines from other regions.
LANGTONS offers En Primeur campaigns to allow clients to secure allocations of sought-after wines, often at an attractive entry point relative to their eventual release price.
How it works
When you purchase En Primeur with LANGTONS:
- You secure an allocation of a specific wine, vintage and quantity.
- You pay for the wine at the time of purchase, well before it is bottled.
- The wine continues to mature in barrel at the producer's estate.
- Once bottled and released by the producer, the wine is shipped to LANGTONS.
- LANGTONS then arranges delivery, Pick Up or storage in line with your preferences.
Typical timeframes
En Primeur wines are generally bottled and delivered 18 to 30 months after purchase, depending on the producer, region and vintage. Your order confirmation will include the estimated delivery window.
Why buy En Primeur?
Clients choose En Primeur to:
- secure wines that may be in limited supply on release
- access entry pricing before market demand is established
- request specific bottle formats, such as magnums or larger
- build a cellar of age-worthy wines from a particular vintage
What is included in the price?
The En Primeur price you pay generally includes the wine itself. Depending on the campaign, the following may be charged separately at the time of shipment:
- shipping from the producer to Australia
- local delivery to your nominated address or storage
- any applicable duties or taxes
Your Private Client Manager or the campaign listing will confirm what is included in your specific purchase.
Risk and ownership
Title to the wine passes to you once payment has been made in full. The wine remains in the care of the producer (and subsequently the shipping chain) until it reaches LANGTONS. LANGTONS will keep you updated on the progress of your allocation.
Storage and delivery on arrival
Once your En Primeur wines arrive at LANGTONS, you can choose to:
- have them delivered to your nominated address
- collect them via Pick Up, where available
- place them into LANGTONS storage in our temperature-controlled warehouse
Storage fees may apply once the wines are available for dispatch. See Will it cost me to store my auction items?
Changes to release
In rare cases, a producer may delay or alter a release. If this occurs, LANGTONS will contact you to discuss your options.
