An auction is, at its heart, an act of trust. Trust that the wines are as described. Trust that the bidding is fair. Trust that the result reflects a genuine, transparent process. At LANGTONS, that trust is something we have built — and protected — over decades.
This is how we uphold it.
Considered cataloguing
Every lot offered through LANGTONS is inspected by our specialists and described as accurately as can reasonably be ascertained at the time. Where relevant, condition notes are included — covering fill level, label, capsule, closure and any other detail that informs a fuller picture.
For mature wines, natural variation is part of the story. We describe what we observe, and we encourage every bidder to read each lot description with care. For more, see A glossary for the collector and Understanding provenance.
Transparent bidding
LANGTONS auctions are conducted with clarity:
- Current leading bids are visible on every lot, in real time.
- The Buyer's Premium is published clearly and applied consistently.
- Reserves are confidential, as is the convention, but the House Reserve mechanism — and how reserves reduce over successive auctions — is set out plainly in our published terms.
- AutoBid ensures that, regardless of your maximum, you pay only one dollar more than the next highest bidder.
For more, see The art of bidding at LANGTONS and AutoBid: bidding with intention.
Restrictions on Seller bidding
To preserve the integrity of every sale, Sellers are not permitted to bid on their own lots, or to arrange for bids to be placed on their behalf. This restriction is set out in our Terms and Conditions, and is enforced consistently.
Handling technical issues
In the rare event that a technical issue affects the fair conduct of an auction, LANGTONS may extend the auction beyond its advertised closing time — to a new closing time falling no earlier than 24 hours, and no later than seven calendar days, after the original close. Where this occurs, relevant bidders are notified by email and through the Websites.
Storage and provenance
Every wine offered through LANGTONS is held in our temperature-controlled cellaring facility prior to dispatch — preserving the condition of the wine through the sale process, and into the hands of the new owner. For more, see Understanding provenance and Storing your wines with LANGTONS.
If a concern arises
We aim for every auction to feel considered and confident. On the rare occasion that a concern arises — whether about a description, a bid, or the conduct of a sale — please speak with our team. For more, see Auction purchases: when a remedy may apply and Making a complaint.
Our broader obligations
LANGTONS operates as part of Endeavour Group, and applies consistent standards across Responsible Service of Alcohol, age verification and consumer protection. For more, see Responsible Service of Alcohol and Our terms, at a glance.
Worth knowing The fairness of an auction is something we work at — quietly, consistently, and with every lot.
A considered word
A LANGTONS auction is not simply a transaction. It is a moment of exchange between Seller, Buyer and a wine with a story of its own. Our role is to hold the centre — fairly, transparently, and with the care fine wine deserves.
