The release of an inherited cellar is rarely a simple matter. It often arrives at a difficult time, and carries with it the weight of memory as much as of value. At LANGTONS, we approach these conversations with the discretion, patience and care they deserve — and with the experience to guide each step thoughtfully.
How we may help
For more than three decades, LANGTONS has been entrusted with cellars released from estates across Australia. Whether the collection comprises a few cherished bottles or a cellar built over a lifetime, our specialists will work with you — and, where relevant, your solicitor, executor or trustee — to find the most considered path forward.
We may assist with:
- Probate and date-of-death valuations — formal valuations for legal, taxation or insurance purposes.
- Cellar assessment — a considered review of the collection's composition, condition and likely market value.
- Logistics and collection — guidance on moving wines from the original cellar to our temperature-controlled facility, with the right care at every step.
- Sale strategy — recommending the most appropriate channels: auction, Wine Store, Private Sales or Client Services, often in combination.
- Settlement — clear, transparent payment arrangements to the nominated estate or beneficiary account.
Beginning the conversation
A first conversation carries no obligation. If you would prefer to share the details by email, by phone, or in person, all are welcome.
Information that helps us at the outset:
- a general sense of the cellar's size and contents
- any inventory or records, if available
- the cellar's storage history
- where the wines are currently held
- the timeframe you are working to
In many cases, photographs of the cellar — or even a few representative bottles — can begin a meaningful conversation. Our specialists will guide you from there.
Valuations for probate and estate purposes
A formal valuation may be required for probate, estate administration, insurance or family settlement. LANGTONS provides considered, market-informed valuations recognised across the Australian wine trade. Where required, we can prepare a documented report suitable for legal and taxation use.
For a general introduction, see The role of a valuation.
How sale typically unfolds
Once an approach is agreed and the wines have been brought into our care, each bottle is:
- inspected with care
- recorded against an account established for the estate
- assessed for suitability
- prepared for presentation, with relevant condition notes
Wines are then released to market through the channels best suited to each — often a combination, depending on the cellar's composition. Settlement is made progressively as sales conclude, in line with our standard arrangements.

Wines that may not be suited to sale
In any considered cellar, a small portion may have aged beyond commercial sale, or may not present in a saleable condition. Where this is the case, we will explain the position clearly and confirm your preferred course of action. For more, see Understanding a No Commercial Value assessment.
Working with your advisors
Where you are working with a solicitor, accountant or executor, we are glad to liaise with them directly — sharing the right information, at the right pace, with the discretion the situation calls for.
Worth knowing An initial valuation conversation is complimentary, and carries no obligation. Decisions about whether — and when — to sell remain entirely yours.
A considered word
The release of a cellar is also, often, the release of memory. We do not take that lightly. Whatever the timeframe, whatever the circumstances, we are here to help when you are ready.
